<image:title>Events - Technical Lecture Symposium - From Shapes to Systems: Rethinking Design with Topology Optimization</image:title>
<image:caption>General Information Date: Monday, March 23rd Time: 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM Location: Helix Brewing Cost: $5 / $10 / $15 for Students / Members / Non-Members (includes pizza and 1 drink) Flyer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U6XwV8hajtrTR7H2OucKv-K3AFHfJKPJ/view Tickets: https://square.link/u/QMkuowo7 Description: This technical symposium highlights three cutting-edge graduate research projects from San Diego State University covering aerospace structures, experimental aerodynamics, and autonomous space guidance. Join AIAA members, industry professionals, and students for an engaging evening of presentations and discussion. Featured Presentations: Modeling of Honeycomb Core Sandwich Composite Fillet Fracture Using XFEM – Austin MacGowan (M.S. Student) Sandwich composites using aluminum honeycomb cores are widely used in aerospace structures due to their high stiffness-to-weight ratio. However, the structural strength of these materials is strongly influenced by fracture behavior in adhesive fillets located between the face-sheets and honeycomb cell walls. Because these fractures occur at extremely small scales, traditional experimental methods cannot fully characterize them. This research applies to the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) within ABAQUS to model crack initiation and propagation within adhesive fillets. By examining how fillet geometry, material properties, and porosity affect fracture behavior, the work aims to improve prediction of interface strength in honeycomb sandwich structures and reduce reliance on costly experimental testing and conservative knockdown factors. Prandtl-D Flying Wing Wind Tunnel Aerodynamic Characterization – Yuichiro Tobita (M.S. Student) The Prandtl-D flying wing concept applies Prandtl’s Bell-Shaped Lift Distribution to reduce induced drag and improve aerodynamic efficiency. Wind-tunnel testing conducted at SDSU measured aerodynamic forces and moments while oil-film visualization techniques revealed detailed surface-flow patterns. Results showed strong agreement with prior computational and experimental studies. Flow visualization identified a spanwise laminar separation bubble at low angles of attack that transitions to full-span separation beyond stall. Complementary computational analysis using the OVERFLOW CFD solver further validated the experimental results, providing insight into the unique aerodynamic behavior of the Prandtl-D configuration. Fuel-Optimized Autonomous Guidance for Human Landings on the Moon and Mars – Christopher Davami (PhD Candidate) Future human missions to the Moon and Mars will require landing vehicles far larger and more precise than today’s robotic missions. Early Mars landers may exceed 60,000 kg and must land within tens of meters of target sites while consuming large amounts of propellant during descent. This research develops computationally efficient onboard guidance algorithms that minimize propellant usage while maintaining landing accuracy and safety. Using optimal control methods designed for flight computers, the approach enables fuel-optimal trajectory generation and real-time tracking control. Simulation results demonstrate a significant reduction in propellant consumption—from approximately 20,000 kg to 8,000 kg—while maintaining precise landing capability for future crewed planetary missions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - March 2026 Technical Lecture - From Shapes to Systems: Rethinking Design with Topology Optimization</image:title>
<image:caption>Date & Time: Friday, March 20th 2026, 6:00 pm Cost: Free! Location: UCSD EBU II Room 305 Closest Parking: Gilman Parking Structure Abstract Despite over three decades of research, topology optimization (TO) continues to provoke a mixed reception in the engineering design community. Lauded as a natural companion to additive manufacturing (AM), it is simultaneously criticized as impractical for real-world engineering design. What remains clear is this: TO is not a push-button tool that produces perfect, ready-to-manufacture designs on demand — nor was it ever meant to be. Yet, in an era of generative AI and conversational design interfaces, where "optimal" solutions are increasingly promised with little more than a prompt, the expectations surrounding automated design tools are shifting. Against this backdrop, TO holds a distinct, and perhaps underappreciated, value: the ability to deliver creative, unintuitive solutions in domains where traditional design intuition fails. This presentation explores the recent advances of topology optimization — not as a universal tool, but as an essential enabler for complex, multiphysics, and multifunctional systems. In simple, single-function applications, optimized results often align with engineering intuition, reducing the marginal value of TO. However, as modern design problems grow in complexity — requiring interdisciplinary integration and multiphysics/multiscale coupling— human intuition alone is no longer sufficient. Upon refection of the current research direction in the context of an ever growing class of complex engineering system, the presentation will highlight its capabilities and the substantial challenges that remain. Speaker Bio H Alicia Kim is a Professor in the Department of Structural Engineering and Program for Material Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, with affiliate appointments in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her M2DO (Multiscale Multiphysics Design Optimization) lab develops topology optimization and computational methods for multiphysics and multifunctional systems. She also leads the SHAPE center (Simulation & Design of Heterogeneous Architectures for Performance and Energy Absorption) working on multiscale nonlinear material design under the NNSA PSAAP IV program. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed journal papers and led research projects funded by NASA, DARPA, DOE, and multiple industry partners. Professor Kim has served on editorial boards of several journals including Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization, and has been actively engaging with the professional societies, Past Secretary General of the International Society of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization and former chair of AIAA MDO TC.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - November 2025 Technical Lecture - Flutter in Commercial Aircraft</image:title>
<image:caption>Featuring Alex Scalabrin, Boeing - Long Beach Flutter is one of those aeroelastic gremlins that lives at the intersection of aerodynamics, structural flexibility, and inertia—get the mix wrong, and an aircraft can shake itself into serious trouble. This seminar breaks down what flutter really is, why it happens, and how engineers keep it away from real airplanes. We’ll explore the fundamentals of flutter behavior, how it appears across different aerospace vehicles, and the key design principles that prevent it. The session then dives into how to assess flutter in commercial aircraft: building stiffness and mass models, incorporating unsteady aerodynamics, and running the analyses that keep wings and control surfaces in check. Real-world examples will show how flutter is mitigated, and we’ll wrap up with how ground and flight tests validate flutter-free performance. About the Speaker Alex Scalabrin brings more than two decades of deep experience in flutter and aeroelasticity. He is an aerospace engineer at Boeing in Long Beach, specializing in loads, flutter engineering, and advanced aeroelastic assessments—including work on NASA’s Subsonic Flight Demonstrator. His portfolio spans unsteady CFD-based flutter analysis, aeroelastic integration, and aeroservoelasticity on programs such as the 737 MAX, 747-8, and 787. Before Boeing, he worked at Embraer on the EMB-110 series and holds a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of Campinas and an MBA from the University of Washington. Don’t miss this opportunity to see how modern flutter research and advanced aeroelastic thinking are redefining what’s possible in today’s aircraft design and testing. <image:title>Events - Late October 2025 Technical Lecture - A Data-Driven Approach to Infer Dynamics of Droplets in High-Speed Propulsion Systems at Hypersonic Speeds Speaker: Professor Gustaaf Jacobs, San Diego State University</image:title>
<image:caption>Abstract: This research focuses on improving the modeling of fuel particle mixing in turbulent gas flows, which is critical for the efficiency of hypersonic propulsion systems. Since simulating every particle directly is computationally infeasible, the study uses macro-scale and statistical mechanics-based models to describe the stochastic dynamics of volumeless particles. The randomness in these systems naturally aligns with data-driven and machine learning approaches for learning dynamics from limited data. In collaboration with Prof. Wang (SDSU) and Prof. Tartakovsky (Stanford), these generalized techniques have shown promise across various fields beyond engineering. <image:caption>Join AIAA San Diego for an evening Technical Lecture, from Member Byron Ward of Wayfarer Aircraft Research & Development, on his most recent paper “Flight Testing Instrumentation Development and Integration for a Subscale Integrated High Lift Propulsor Testbed”. Flight and wind tunnel testing was performed to evaluate the performance of the Integrated High Lift Propulsor (IHLP), a novel Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) system. Link to Tickets: Buy Online! Abstract: Recent advancements in electric and hybrid-electric aircraft have sparked interest in Advanced Aerial Mobility (AAM), enabling innovative air transport solutions. Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP), with its favorable aero-propulsive interactions, is a key focus for advanced aircraft designs, and thus an area of significant interest for academia and industry. Wayfarer Aircraft has developed and patented a novel new form of of blown wing lift augmentation called the Integrated High Lift Propulsor (IHLP), which uses DEP integrated with a Krueger slat or flap. This paper presents the instrumented, reconfigurable subscale IHLP distributed electric propulsion testbed that will be used to parameterize the performance and handling qualities (P&HQ) of IHLP. The subscale aircraft, which was developed from a 35%-scale Cessna 182 R/C scale model aircraft, was instrumented with a custom-integrated flight control and data acquisition system developed to enable this flight research - specifically a Holybro Pixhawk 6X autopilot running custom flight control software coupled with a custom version of the Al Volo FDAQ data acquisition system. The paper presents IHLP including its advantages and performance improvements in high-lift and cruise conditions compared to conventional distributed electric propulsion (DEP) systems. The detailed development of the IHLP subscale testbed are presented, including modifications, instrumentation design, and the integration of the data acquisition and flight control systems. Preliminary results from ground testing are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the instrumented IHLP testbed.</image:caption>
